Jean 'Binta' Breeze - Live
SHARE VIDEO
From: chairmanohtv
Jean 'Binta' Breeze was a popular Jamaican Dub poet and storyteller whose performances are so powerful she has been called a 'one-woman festival'. Pamela Robertson-Pearce filmed two performances by her at the Y Theatre, Leicester, in March and October 2010 which are included on THIRD WORLD GIRL: SELECTED POEMS, a book with DVD published by Bloodaxe Books in June 2011 (together with an interview by Jane Dowson). In this extract from the March reading, Jean reads three poems: 'simple things', 'ordinary mawning' and 'Aid Travels with a Bomb'. With thanks to Bloodaxe Books for permission to include Jean's poems in this video, and to Lydia Towsey of the Lyric Lounge for organising the readings at the Y. Talking to Black Lives Matter UK Supporters
Description: Sam Sholli asked Black Lives Matter UK activists a few questions at their #ShutDown event in London on 05/08/2016.
N.B. The 2,000 deaths in police custody over the last 10 years figure cited by one of the Black Lives Matter supporters in the video appears highly inflated.
According to figures from Inquest, since 1990 in England and Wales there have been 1563 deaths in police custody or otherwise following contact with the police. Around 10% were from BAME backgrounds.
The IPCC has also reported 238 deaths in or following police custody from 2004/05 to 2015/16.
