Description: In October 2016 a plaque commemorating Asquith Xavier, an accidental campaigner who overturned a colour bar at Euston 50 years ago, was unveiled at Euston station by his family.
As recently as 1966, at some British Railways stations, black people were not allowed to work in jobs where they came into contact with passengers. The first Race Relations Act had been passed in 1965 but did not cover employment.

Description: As part of ‘The Great War’ Centenary events and Black History Month, Year 6 pupils at Wellesbourne Primary worked alongside School Improvement Liverpool to celebrate the contribution made by Black British Soldiers during World War One.
Pupils were filmed reciting the poem ’Man v Land’ by local poet Curtis Watt, whilst dressed in costumes from the World War One era. Curtis’ poem is based on ‘Black Tommies – British Soldiers of African Descent in the First World War’ written by local historian Dr Ray Costello. His book is the first dedicated to recognising their service within the regular British army, opposed to overseas units.

Description: Nigerians made up more than half of the total force of 90,000 West African soldiers deployed to south east Asia after 1943, as part of the British army’s 81st and 82nd (West Africa) Divisions.
But while the role of Indians and Gurkhas in the campaign to drive the Japanese out of Burma is well-known, allied commander General William Slim did not mention the African soldiers in his speech thanking the 14th army.
Seventy years on, many remain bitter that their contribution was never recognised fully. This is their story, of surviving two years of intense jungle warfare, of helping secure Victory over Japan, through exclusive, never before seen footage of West Africa divisions fighting in Burma, courtesy of the Imperial War Museum, and Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League.

In 2002, when they released the album Roots Controller and returned to the music scene in full force, they were welcomed back enthusiastically by both audiences and critics.

When Don Letts, a young black Briton, dared to play Reggae at a famous Punk club, he brought together two disparate groups, both victimized by a controversial new Stop and Search legislation that had been introduced by the British Establishment. “Superstonic Sound: The Rebel Dread” is the story of how two cultures and two musical genres which could not be more different, came together during one politically-charged time and place, and the story of the man who made it happen.

Description: A Charles Kaufman documentary from 2013 about the English classical music composer of Sierra-Leonean descent, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912), was made during the centennial of SC-T's death in 2012, and includes a number of excellent premiere recordings of SC-T works. Concentrating on Coleridge-Taylor and his visits to the United States in 1904, 1906 and 1910 — and his influence on the founders of the African-American Civil Rights Movement and the NAACP — this documentary is a who's-who of SC-T scholarship, with commentary by historians who have spent their lives researching SC-T and his work. Additional first rate performances are contributed by Rachel Barton Pine, violinist, Rodrick Dixon, tenor, and a score of talented African-American singers and instrumentalists. Mini documentaries within give insight into the lives of Maud Powell and J. Rosamond Johnson. Of special interest is the performance of one of SC-T's last works, "Keep me From Sinking Down," for violin and orchestra, based on the African-American spiritual — prepared from the manuscript score and presented on the centennial of its first performance on location in Norfolk, Connecticut, where American violinist Maud Powell first played the work on June 4, 1912.
